After completing the Scott Pilgrim Comic Book Series I was looking for a similar Comic Book, one that had elements of Comedy, Slice of Life, and Fantasy. I thought it would be a great idea to check books by the same Author/Artist Bryan Lee O’Malley and I happened to come across an Ad for 'Seconds'. I read the plot and decided to buy the Comic Book and give it a shot.
I had been a fan of Bryan Lee O'Malley’s Comic Books after reading Scott Pilgrim. His Art Style is very unique. His characters are vibrant and I really like the way he dresses his characters and also how immersive his environments are. His storylines are usually simple but the characters keep you engaged and take you for a ride. Most of his books are based on Young Adults and have elements of Teenage Drama.
Now let's get into 'Seconds'.
This story is about Katie, who is a lead chef at a restaurant named 'Seconds'. She built the restaurant with the help of her buddies and worked extremely hard on it, making it one of the most popular restaurants in town. However, most of her friends have moved on to a different life leaving the restaurant in the hands of a bunch of stylish teenagers.
For this and many more reasons, Katie wanted to start a new restaurant of her own. So to make her dream a reality she buys some old property and starts anew. But as she begins her new endeavor Katie finds out that the repairs and renovations are unending. Not to mention she has to keep up with her current affairs at 'Seconds' as well. Now Katie rents an apartment in the same building as that of 'Seconds'. And she happens to come in contact with a house spirit that guards the house. It introduces her to a mushroom and a notebook which can be used to undo and repair parts of her life that she wants to fix.
For example, one day she hogs onto a burger and a few drinks that upset her stomach causing her to take endless trips to the bathroom. But, with the help of the mushrooms and the notebook, she revises the entire episode by writing to correct that incident, and voila, the next day she wakes up with all the errors fixed. Although she gets a dream of how she fixed the doing. But pretty neat right?!
Now Katie happens to find plenty of these mushrooms in the basement and starts abusing them to fix menial issues. But the notebook has some rules too, which Katie completely ignores. And things begin to spiral out of control when some negative beings get animated as a consequence of the mushroom abuse. The concluding part is how she gets a hang of herself and defeats these beings with the help of her friends. Overall it's a good read if you like Young Adult / Teenage Drama genres.
I bought the comic book from Amazon which took about a month to ship. It’s a hardcover 336-page comic book. The first thing you’ll notice is the quality of the book. The hardcover comes with a gloss finish with a wrap-around with cool artwork on it. The paper quality is brilliant and the colors on the print are crisp and magnificent. I absolutely loved it.
It only took a couple of days to finish the book so you can tell how engrossing I was. I hope you give it a shot and enjoy reading it too.
