Scott Pilgrim - Comic Book vs Movie Review

Scott Pilgrim: Comic vs Movie Review

When I saw the trailer, I wasn’t as impressed with the movie, there was a lot going on in the trailer that didn’t really make sense. It seemed like the Speed Racer trailer. A movie trailer that never intrigued me to watch the movie. But, when I saw the first jam scene on my friend’s recommendation, I couldn’t wait to watch the movie. As an amateur musician, I could relate to it so well. We used to jam at a friend’s place, have big dreams, made our songs, and when recorded on our phone microphones sounded exactly like the songs Sex-Bob-Omb played.

Now, if you haven’t read the comic book or haven’t seen the movie, you’re in luck. Both are great. The comic book is a much immersive experience with a lot of detail and interesting nuances into the life of Scott Pilgrim. However, the movie isn’t a bad compilation either. The movie picks out all the amazing scenes from the 7 comic book volumes available and has stitched them amazingly to showcase a great story. I would recommend watching the movie first, because the way Edgar Wright has directed the movie with the fast swooshes and cut-scenes, you’ll have a quick and enjoyable experience of the world of Scott Pilgrim in his selfish, stupid, poor, and uncomplicated life-choices. Kim Pine and Ramona Flowers, played by Alison Pill and Mary Elizabeth Winstead were both amazing. I fell in love with both of them. A lot of the other characters were amazingly casted, for example Chris Evans, Brandon Rowth, Anna Kendrick, all of them played their role perfectly. The movie’s soundtrack and great visuals, along with the vintage video-game based theme, make this movie a child’s dream come true. Obviously, the Millennials, the ones who dabbled in the age before the smart-phone and the internet. The new kids have known realistic graphics, 3D, and HD videos throughout their life, they’ll never understand the joy of vintage video games.

After watching the movie a few times, and still wanting more, I couldn’t stop myself from looking for more content. At the time, I didn’t know the comic book even existed. With a few simple clicks I stumbled upon Bryan Lee O'Malley’s website and comic book issue one. With a few reviews in, I bought the 1st volume and was instantly hooked onto it. 200 pages of pure hilarious madness. If you’ve already seen the movie, and think you already know the gist of the whole movie, you are wrong. The comic book story line takes a lot of twists and turns and has a very different storyline. Well, most of the scenes in the movie are the exact same in the comic book, but you are surely going to enjoy the comic book more than the movie. That is, if you like reading, if you don’t enjoy reading, you should stick to movies. 200 pages per volume is a lot of content and beautiful stories, multiple it 7 times and you have a universe of fun waiting for you. Give Scott Pilgrim a try, the comic book, and the movie, both haven’t let me down. I would recommend watching the movie first then reading the comic book. My vice versa experience of reading the books first and watching the movies later have always left a bad taste in my mouth regarding the movies.
